Norfolk Island Pine

Norfolk island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) known as “Christmas tree plant”. This beauty is a bright grass green and the branches are produced in regular whorls of five at short but regular intervals, making it a very pretty and symmetrical plant. It is one of the most popular house plants. We find that they can be placed in a 15 gallon plant container out in a shady part of landscape, greenhouse, or a business inside or outside. Cool, filtered sun. Norfolk pine is slow growing; a ten year old plant rarely exceeds 6ft. in height and 4ft, width. If left in container, remove browning branches at bottom of tree.
Feed with standard liquid fertilizer every two weeks in spring and summer
Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring using soil based potting mixture depending on the size. Small plants need to be repotted in spring, after purchasing them.
Top-dress with Spanish moss.
The Norfolk Island pine will stand a great deal of neglect so long as it is in a cool place and the soil about its roots are kept moist. Water more sparingly during the winter rest period.
When planting outside in a shaded area, do not plant near currant and gooseberry bushes. Whereas this causes a deadly disease of white pines called “Blister-Rust. Blister-rust cankers on pines should be cut out immediately and burned.
