This is a common house, greenhouse, and groundcover plant. Their beauty trailing habit and ability to grow wild under adverse conditions make it a good candidate for hanging baskets, landscapes, and plain containers.
Most species come from tropical America, although one is native to North America.
Flowers are tiny and white, and the stemless leaves may be green, green and white, or blue green. Some species have leaves with purple undersides.
An all-purpose soil is used and allowed to dry between applications of water. An east, west or lightly shaded southern exposure can be utilized.
Propagation is by cuttings, they root easily.
Good species include giant white inch plant (Tradescantia albiflora cv. ‘Albovittata’).
Wandering Jew (Tradescantia Fluminensis)
Common Spiderwart (Tradescantia Virginiana)
The last is native and hardy over much of the United States.
