Ragwort or groundsel is the name of several relatives of the cineraria and candleplant.
Often grown outdoors in the border, ragworts can also be grown indoors or in the greenhouse as potted plants, with seed sown in April producing bloom in December.
Most ragworts prefer a well-drained garden soil and full sun, and if brought indoors they must have a cool location, good light and plenty of water. Propagation is by seed, cuttings or division.
Dusty-miller ragwort (S. Cineraria) is a hardy perennial growing to two in half feet. Its silver foliage is somewhat woolly and its yellow or cream-colored flowers are small, daisylike and clustered.
Seed may be started indoors in March and planted out in early May after all danger of frost has pasted. Plants should be set one foot apart each way. Add mulch around Dusty-millers in landscape.
