It reads in Exodus 3:1-6 Easy English Bible> Moses worked as a shepherd and he took care of Jethro’s sheep. Jethro was his wife’s father and he was the priest of Midian. Moses led the sheep to the far side of the desert. He came to Sinai, the mountain of God. The angel of the Lord appeared to Moses there. The angel looked like a fire that was burning in the middle of a bush. Moses looked at the bush. He saw that it was on fire, but the fire still did not destroy it. Moses said to himself, ‘I will go nearer and see this strange thing. I want to see why the bush is not completely burned.’ The Lord saw that Moses came near to look at the bush. God spoke to Moses from inside the bush. He said, ‘Moses! Moses!’ Moses answered, ‘Here I am.’ God said to Moses, ‘Do not come nearer! Remove your shoes from your feet. The ground that you are standing on is holy.’ Then God said, ‘I am the God that your father worshipped. I am also the God of your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Then Moses covered his face. He was afraid to look at God. (Luke explains that Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection.) It reads about Paul in Acts 23:4-8 Easy English Bible. > The men who were standing near Paul said to him, ‘You must not say bad things against our most important priest!’ Paul replied, ‘My brothers, I did not know that this man is the most important priest. Our Jewish law says, “Do not say bad things against the man who rules your people.” So I should not have said anything bad against him.’ Then Paul saw that there were some Sadducees and also some Pharisees in the meeting. So he shouted out to the whole group of Jewish leaders, ‘My brothers, I am a Pharisee! My father was also a Pharisee. I believe that dead people will certainly rise and they will live again. That is the reason why you are judging me today.’ As soon as Paul said that, the Pharisees and Sadducees began to argue with each other. People in the group thought different things about Paul. (The Sadducees do not believe that dead people will live again. They do not believe that there are angels or spirits. But the Pharisees believe in all these things. Jesus’ response has the tone of a teacher who is instructing the Sadducees about the character of the resurrection in the age to come. In the second part of his response, he meets them on their own exposition grounds in his reinterpretation of the story of Moses and God at the burning bush. He interprets the Lord’s saying: “I am the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob”, as a sign of the resurrection. Furthermore, he asserts that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had been raised from the dead)
It reads in Luke 20:27-40 Easy English Bible> Then some of the Sadducees came to see Jesus. The Sadducees do not believe that anyone becomes alive again after they die. They wanted to ask Jesus a question. ‘Teacher,’ they said to him, ‘Moses wrote this in the Bible for us: “A man may die and leave a wife but no children. Then that man’s brother must marry the woman. Then their children will be called the children of the brother who died.” But once there were seven brothers. The oldest brother married a woman. Then he died before they had any children. So the second brother married this woman. But he also died without children. Then the third brother married the woman. The same thing happened to all seven brothers. They all died but they had no children. After all this, the woman also died. You teach that one day dead people will become alive again. So, on that day, whose wife will the woman be? She had married all seven of those brothers.’Jesus answered them, ‘Men and women who are alive on earth are the ones who get married. But God has chosen some people to live again with him. He will raise them up after they have died. Those people will not marry. They will not have husbands or wives, and they cannot die anymore. This is because they will live as the angels live in heaven. They are children of God. He has made them alive again to live with him. God indeed makes dead people alive again. Moses showed us this in his report about the bush in the wilderness. He told us that our Lord God is the God of Abraham. He is the God of Isaac. And he is the God of Jacob. But God is not the God of people who are dead. He is the God of people who are alive. For God, all people continue to be alive.’ Some of the teachers of God’s Law agreed with Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘that was a very good answer.’ After that, they were all afraid to ask Jesus any more questions.
