In Genesis 23 it is quite an emotional chapter. It centers around the death of Sarah, Abraham’s wife, and the upcoming events. It begins by mentioning that Sarah lived to be 127 years old. She died in Kiribati Arba (Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham mourns and weeps for her. After mourning, Abraham approaches the Hittites to buy a burial site for Sarah. He insists on purchasing a plot of land. He wants to ensure the right to the land legally belongs to him, rather than accepting it as a gift. Ephron the Hittite owns the cave of Machpelah, which Abraham wants as Sarah’s burial site. After some negotiation, Abraham purchases the field and the cave at Machpelah for 400 shekels of silver. This becomes the first piece of land owned by Abraham in Canaan. Abraham buries Sarah in the cave of Machpelah. This sets a significant precedent for the burial of the patriarchs and matriarchs of Israel. Genesis 23 signifies the end of Sarah’s life. It also highlights Abraham’s faith and his respect for proper burial practices. Additionally, it underscores the importance of legal ownership of the land.
Father God, Thank You for this new day to breathe. We praise You for the opportunity to renew our thoughts. The mind is a gift from You. Seeking Your wisdom and guidance as Abraham did when he sought a resting place for Sarah. Give me the guidance to keep what I have that You have given us. Others try to steal it, but they don’t own it. Lord You own it all. Quiet the stillness of our hearts. We come before You. We are reflecting on the life of Sarah. We also consider the faith of Abraham. We are reminded of the impermanence of life and the importance of honoring those we love. Bless us as we cherish our loved ones deeply and create lasting memories with them. We believe for the courage to follow Your will, just as Abraham demonstrated unwavering trust in Your promises. Give us that unwavering faith. I love You, praise You, thank You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
