Moses asks, “What is Your name?” God replies, “I AM who I AM.” This name, YHWH, reveals God’s eternal, self-sustaining nature. God told Moses that his name is ‘I am who I am.’ The words can mean, ‘I am what I am.’ They can also mean, ‘I will be what I will be.’ He was already God from the beginning, before he made the world. Genesis 1:1. He is God now, at the present time. He will be God in the future time, forever. In English, we write God’s special name as the Lord, with big letters. In Hebrew the name is YHWH. In English, this name is sometimes written as ‘Yahweh’ or ‘Jehovah’. God is not defined by time, circumstance, or human limitation. He simply is, always present, always faithful.
It reads in Exodus 3:13–15 Easy: Then Moses said to God, ‘If I go to the Israelites, they may not believe me. I will say, “The God that your ancestors worshipped has sent me to you.” But then they will ask me, “What is his name?” Then what will I say to them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am! Say this to the Israelite people: “I AM has sent me to you.” ’ God also said to Moses, ‘Say this to the Israelite people: “It is the Lord God who has sent me to you. He is the God that your ancestors worshipped. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” That is my name for all time. All generations of my people must call me by that name.
Father God, Thank You and praise You that when we ask, “Who are You?” You do not answer with limits or labels. You speak with fire, “I AM WHO I AM.” You are not defined by time, not confined by circumstance, not shaped by human expectation. You simply are, always present, always faithful. You were God before the world began, You are God in this very moment, and You will be God forevermore. So, when we feel uncertain, when we ask, “Who am I to go?” remind us that Your name is enough. “I AM” has sent us. “I AM” goes with us. Let Your name be our courage. Let Your presence be our peace. Let every generation know You as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the God who still speaks through burning bushes. We worship You, the One who simply is. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
