These verses teach that if a master injured a servant so badly that they lost an eye or a tooth, the servant had to be set free immediately. In a world where slavery was common and often harsh, this law did something remarkable: It protected the vulnerable. It limited the master’s power. It gave dignity and justice to the injured servant. It showed that harm had consequences, even for those in authority. This wasn’t God approving slavery, it was God placing boundaries in a broken system so people could not be abused without accountability. At its heart, the passage reminds us: Every person matters. Every injury matters. God sees. God defends.
It reads in Exodus 21: 26–27 Easy: If a master hits the eye of his male slave or his female slave, he might destroy it. Then he must let the slave go away as a free person to pay for the loss of their eye. If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, he must also let the slave go away to pay for the loss of the tooth.
Father God, You, see every wound and every act of harm. Teach us to honor the dignity of every person, no matter what their place or position. Where power has been misused, bring justice. Where pain has been caused, bring healing. Make us people who protect, who restore, and who treat others with the care You desire. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
