This describes how God led the Israelites out of Egypt, not by the shortest route through Philistine territory, but by the longer way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. He did this to protect them from discouragement and fear of war. God’s presence was visible as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, guiding and assuring them that He was with them. Even when the way seems roundabout, God’s path is purposeful. His guidance is both protective and preparatory.

It reads in Exodus 13:17-22 Easy: When Pharaoh let the people go away, God did not lead them through the country of the Philistines. This was a short way for them to go, but God did not lead them that way. God said, ‘If the people have to fight a war, they may change their minds. Then they may return to Egypt.’ So God led the people round by the desert road. They went towards the Red Sea. When the Israelites came out of the country of Egypt, they were ready to fight. Moses took Joseph’s bones with him. Joseph had made the Israelites promise to do this. He had said, ‘One day, God will come and he will save you. Then you must carry my bones with you when you leave this place.’ The Israelites travelled from Succoth and they arrived at Etham. They put up their tents there, on the edge of the desert. As they travelled, the Lord was leading them. During the day, he was there as a pillar of cloud that went in front of them. During the night, he went as a pillar of fire. This gave them light, so they could travel during the day or the night. The cloud did not leave the people during the day. Nor did the fire leave them during the night. It was always in front of them.
Father God, You are the One who leads Your people with wisdom and love. Thank You and praise You for guiding us, even when the path feels longer or harder. Help us to trust that Your way is always best, and that You protect us from battles we are not yet ready to face. May Your presence be our pillar of cloud by day and our pillar of fire by night, reminding us that we are never alone. Strengthen our faith to follow You step by step, until we reach the place You have promised. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen and Amen.
