“Time Of Rest For The Land”

Leviticus 25:1-7 ERV: The Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai. He said, “Tell the Israelites: When you enter the land that I am giving to you, you must let the land have a special time of rest. This will be a special time of rest to honor the Lord. You will plant seed in your field for six years. You will trim your vineyards for six years and bring in its fruits. But during the seventh year, you will let the land rest. This will be a special time of rest to honor the Lord. You must not plant seed in your field or trim your vineyards. You must not cut the crops that grow by themselves after your harvest. You must not gather the grapes from your vines that are not trimmed. The land will have a year of rest. “The land will have a year of rest, but you will still have enough food. There will be enough food for your men and women servants. There will be food for your hired workers and for the foreigners living in your country. And there will be enough food for your cattle and other animals to eat.

When Moses speaks to Israel about the sabbath for the land, God is teaching a rhythm: the land itself belongs to the Lord and needs a season of rest. As the people enter the promised gift, they are reminded that possession is stewardship, not ownership. The seventh year’s rest is a tangible act of trust, a refusal to squeeze every last harvest from the soil and an affirmation that God provides even when we stop working. This holy pause points forward to deeper rest in God’s care: when we cease striving and acknowledge that the land, our work, and our lives are sustained by his generosity. Rest is not waste; it is obedience, trust, and recognition that God’s gifts require care and seasons of renewal.

Dear Lord Jesus, You, who gave us the land as a gift, teach us to steward what You entrust to us. Help us to stop long enough to trust Your provision, to let the soil and our souls recover, and to honor Your rhythm of work and rest. Give us faith to obey the sabbath of the land and wisdom to live as grateful stewards. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Your Mighty Precious Name Lord Jesus Amen.
