
Your child will soon be getting his last report card of the year. While you’re discussing how well ‘he did, talk about how well you did as a parent.
Use this quiz below to assess your parenting strengths & weaknesses. On a separate score sheet, give yourself five points for something you always do, zero points for something you never do, or any score in between.
Ask your child to do the same. Don’t be surprised if your child disagrees with your assessments – try not to be defensive! Use both of your assessments to begin a conversation that will improve your relationship with your child.
1. Time. Do I spend enough time with you?
Am I available when you need me?
2. Feedback. Do I give you praise when you deserve
it & avoid criticizing you too much?
3. Caring. Do I let you know what I care about your
problems & your schoolwork?
4. Communications. Do I really listen to what
you say?
5. Authority. Do I make & enforce rules fairly &
consistently? Do I let you have a say in decisions
that affect you?
6. Teaching. Do I help you learn new things?
7. Friendliness. Am I “approachable” & Pleasant
to be around?
8. Acceptance. Do I accept you for who you are
instead of trying to make you into someone
I think you should be?
9. Love. Do I tell you & show you I love you often
enough? Do you know I Love you even when I’m
angry?
10. Basic needs. Do I provide you with enough
clothes, money, food, & safety for you to feel
comfortable & secure?
11. Role. model. Are my actions consistent with
what I say is good behavior?
12. Independence. Do I give you more freedom,
as you demonstrate you can act responsibly?
