Jacob sets out for Egypt, but before he goes too far, he stops in Beersheba and offers sacrifices. That night, God speaks to him: “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, I will go down with you and surely bring you back again.” God meets Jacob in his uncertainty, a gentle reassurance that though the journey is unknown, His presence will remain steadfast. This promise wraps itself around the heart like a shawl in cold winds. There’s something so tender in how God doesn’t just issue a command, He calls Jacob by name, twice: “Jacob, Jacob.” It’s the voice of familiarity, of a Father meeting His child not with pressure, but with presence. Isn’t that what we crave in our own uncertainties? Not just a map, but a companion. Not only answers, but assurance.
It reads in Genesis 46:1–4 Easy: So, Jacob left Canaan. He took everything that belonged to him. When he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to God, the God of his father Isaac. During the night, God spoke to Israel in a dream. He said, ‘Jacob! Jacob!’ Jacob replied, ‘Yes, I am here.’ God said, ‘I am God. I am the God that your father worshipped. Do not be afraid to go to Egypt. Your descendants will be very many so that you become a great nation there. I will go with you to Egypt. I will also bring you back again. Joseph will be with you when you die.’
Dear Blessed Lord of the covenant, I come like Jacob to the edge of known ground, heart full of questions and hands full of legacy. As he offered sacrifice beneath the stars of Beersheba, so I lay down my fear and ask for your voice in the night. You who called him by name, speak again into my stillness. Say what only Your Spirit can say: “Do not be afraid! I will go with you.” You are not the God of abandonment, but the God who walks the dusty miles and waits in the next chapter before I arrive. Should my path take me away from what is familiar, may it concurrently foster a deeper connection with You. Steady my steps. Hold my story as You held his. Bring me back in Your time, whole, restored, woven into the promise You’ve always been fulfilling. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
