Leviticus 19:11-12 ERV “You must not steal. You must not cheat people. You must not lie to each other. You must not use my name to make false promises. If you do that, you will show that you don’t respect the name of your God. I am the Lord!

These verses are of practical laws calling Israel to live as a holy people set apart for God. The commands connect personal ethics with covenant identity. Three related sins: The passage groups theft, falsehood, and misuse of God’s name, all actions that harm neighbors and dishonor God. The focus is both social (justice, trust) and religious (reverence). Vows and speech: Ancient Near Eastern culture placed great weight on oaths and names; swearing by God’s name carried solemn obligation. False oaths undermine communal trust and profane the divine. The law insists on truthful speech and integrity in promises. Ethical through these short verses point to a larger biblical theme: right relationship with God shows itself in right treatment of others, honesty, fairness, and respect.

Father God, give us honesty in our words, integrity in our actions, and reverence for Your name. Help us to keep our promises, to speak truth, and to treat others with fairness. Shape our hearts so that our speech and deeds honor You and build trust in the community. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Your Mighty Precious Name Jesus Amen.
