The Lord said to Moses, “The Day of Atonement will be on the tenth day of the seventh month. There will be a holy meeting. You must not eat food, and you must bring an offering as a gift to the Lord. You must not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement. On that day the priests will go before the Lord and perform the ceremony that makes you pure. “Anyone who refuses to fast on this day must be separated from their people. If anyone does any work on this day, I will destroy that person from among the people. You must not do any work at all. This is a law that continues forever for you, wherever you live. It will be a special day of rest for you. You must not eat food. You will start this special day of rest on the evening following the ninth day of the month. This special day of rest continues from that evening until the next evening.” Leviticus 23:26-32 ERV:

God calls Israel to observe the Day of Atonement: on the tenth day of the seventh month they must humble themselves, deny themselves, and rest from work. It is a holy, solemn day of cleansing and reconciliation before the Lord. God’s call to “afflict your souls” and to rest on the Day of Atonement is not an end in itself but a means to renewed relationship. The discipline of humility—turning away from our usual busyness, confessing what separates us from God, and intentionally seeking His mercy—creates space for healing. In a world that prizes productivity and distraction, this passage reminds us that spiritual health sometimes requires deliberate stillness and honest heart-work. When we stop striving and bring our true selves before God, we make room for His forgiveness to reshape us and for His presence to settle in.

Today, set aside a short, quiet time to name one thing you need God’s forgiveness for and one way you need His help to change. Let silence and confession prepare you to receive God’s mercy rather than trying to earn it.

Oh! Lord Father God, teach me the humility this passage calls for. Help me to stop long enough to bring my true heart to You, to confess what separates me from You, and to receive Your cleansing and peace. Renew my spirit, quiet my striving, and lead me into deeper fellowship with You. Love You, thank You, praise You and give you all the Honor and glory in Your Precious Mighty Name Lord Jesus Amen.
